Contemporary Impressionism and Abstraction
Interpreting the landscape in a way that is personal and unique to me has always been the focus of my approach to landscape painting. Eliminating much of the detail I see makes my compositions simpler, yet bolder. My strokes are kept loose and expressive which accentuates the sense of vibrancy and emotion in the work. Color is my passion and I enhance the colors I see in nature or invent them entirely, creating a joyous and harmonious palette. I look for small fragments of beauty in the landscape - those moments that take my breath away in awe and wonder. Interpreting the landscape from my own viewpoint, I hope to engage the viewer to stop, even just for a moment, and experience a little of the excitement and joy I felt.
In my abstract paintings, each piece is a journey of adventure and discovery. There is a path I seek of of thoughtful, intentional composition with intuitive placement of color, shapes, and surface complexity. When asked what the paintings mean, the only response is that abstract work is best felt emotionally and intuitively, rather than understood. Identifying and acknowledging ever changing responses to what life offers, and interpreting those responses with brilliant color, intriguing form and complex surfaces, leads me to the core of my work.
Undulating color, shape, line and form are my subject matter.
It is this journey of adventure, excitement, discovery, and conclusion and I hope to communicate with the viewer.
